Antoniolo Gattinara 2014

The basic Gattinara that Antoniolo ages just like Reserve, and 2014 is the last vintage they didn't label as such. Made of 50-60 years old vines growing on volcanic soils. Spontaneous fermentation in cement tank, aged in 25-35 hl Slavonian and French oak casks for 36 months. Around 9000 bottles are produced yearly.

There are wines you just want to come back to, and luckily, some good people manage to store these beauties. This wine is amazing. Once again, it appeared much younger, defying what's written on the label.

Beautiful wine, fresh, delicate, and seductive. Notes of cherry, briar, blood, red flowers, earth, tarf, and some mushrooms. Unexpectedly juicy, flavourful, soft, and persistent. It's like a dream after a long day.

As good as always. No one guessed the vintage, as it feels so much younger. A beautiful bouquet full of cherry, briar, blood, red flowers, earth, tar and mushrooms. Medium-plus body, well-balanced, well-structured, sophisticated and beautiful. Every bottle is a pleasure.

The last time I tasted this wine was more than a year ago. On one hand, I am happy to lay my hands on this vintage one more, on the other hand, I don't understand why it's still available considering its price and value. Delicate bouquet: red flowers (like ros茅), blood (hey baby, we like your iron), cherry, briar and some tar notes (probably from the age?). Oof, and it's so well-balanced and structured! With mature tannin, good acidity and a long aftertaste, this wine is simply delicious.

My first Gattinara and definitely not my last. Forest berries, raw meat and truffles. Subtle and sophisticated nose. Refreshing, well balanced, very long evolving aftertaste, flavours of wild strawberry, cherry and wet leaves. Over time it becomes more tough and heavy.

Antoniolo

Unlike the famous Barolo and Barbaresco, the name of Gattinara is less-know to a wide audience. And no wonder. It's located far to the North of the famous Monferrato hills and occupies drastically smaller land (93 ha vs almost 2000 ha in Barolo). Yet, located closer to the Alps and growing on different soils (granite and iron-rich vs calcareous marl soils), Gattinara produces more delicate and less brutal wines with elevated acidity and less astringency. Besides. Being less prestigious, they are more affordable - both in price and older vintage availability.

Antoniolo is one of the most prominent producers in the region. Mario Antoniolo established the winery in 1948. the 1970s, they had an enviable collection of Gattinara's top crus, including a monopole on the Osso San Grato vineyard. At that time, Rosanna was running the winery, and upon request from famous wine journalist Luigi Veronelli, she bottled these crus as single vineyard wines.
